Initial Scope: to tackle the ‘convenience’ and ‘security’ factors of money Our identified problem / question: In New York City, we are all required and expected to pay ‘tips’ for certain transactions, such as in restaurants, taxi fares, and delivery fares. Rough 15% is expected but it may differ upon the various places and people we encounter. The problem occurs when things get rather complicated when a group of people is involved rather than an individual, and the ‘tip’ always seems to be a hassle and inconvenience to calculate evenly. Also, many individuals that are new to the city are not aware of this expected norm, and are sometimes taken advantage of, hence the issue with the security of money. Our initial concept of a solution: (Human Centered Design) To develop a design of a ‘system’ to enhance the convenience of ‘tipping’, as well as provide security of one’s money while doing so, especially towards foreigners new to the city. These painters, with the advent of local DTP (Desktop Publishers) shops, are rapidly going out of business with many of them switching to the quicker, cheaper but uglier vinyls. Many painters have given up their practice altogether. It involves documenting the typefaces of road side painters across India and digitizing it so that it serves as a resource for present and future generations. HandpaintedType is a collaborative project. How it works: Because most of the fonts in the Painter series are multi-coloured, they will in effect be digital versions of the once popular Chromatic Type. The style was popular among wood block printers who produced fonts in two components, so each component has its own colour. Instead of different weights, the typefaces will feature versions that include Shadow and Highlights. My role: To digitize Painter Kafeel's second typeface.
